How the version of configuration artifact is defined?

In the documentation I saw examples of the plan files where the version of configuration artifact is specified, so I thought that the server somehow should be able to determine the version of the actual artifact. But how?

Obviously the "myconfig.properties" file cannot contain the manifest like a bundle, and the documentation says that the name of the artifact is the file name minus ".properties". I tried to put the version in the name, it did not work.
