The first thing I'd try is to update to the latest nightly snapshot of grails tooling. Here is the update site:

http://dist.springsource.com/snapshot/STS/nightly/e3.5

We have recently made some changes to this area that might fix your problem. If this doesn't work, then I'd be happy to explore further.
