STS crash using latest Sun and JRockit JVMs

I've been having a bit of trouble with STS 2.2.0 on Kubuntu 9.10 x86_64 (all updates installed) using both Sun jdk1.6.0_18 and JRockit 1.6.0_14 (build R27.6.5-32_o-121899-1.6.0_14-20091001-2113-linux-x86_64). Both JVMs are crashing with SEGV errors in this library:

Earlier versions of the JVMs seem OK.

this crash in libpangoft2-1.0.so seems to be a common issue with Eclipse on linux variants. I wasn't able to find a general solution to this yet.
