What is SI?

This is a pretty vague question, but I was hoping to get some input. I have been asked to describe SI and how it relates to and is different from ESB/SOA/etc and how it helps solve business integration issues currently being experienced. Has anyone else had to deal with this? I am trying to justify why it is beneficial for us to use on a project.
