Just an FYI, the sampledb that you need to start doesn't have a hsqldb.jar file that is referenced in the startdb.sh. You can copy the one out of the WEB-INF/lib folder to the sampledb folder and then the startdb scripts will work.

Note that you can also just use a launch configuration in Eclipse (my preferred option). I've exported mine and attached it here (had to put it in a zip file to be able to upload it).
