how to show errors for checkbox(es)

here is what i want to do.

a.) User selects clicks on checkbox(es) from a page.
b.) User hits submit.

b1.) No error continue.

b2.) If their is error. Display error message for that checkbox ONLY and ONLY next to the checkbox that has error.

Checkbox #2 | error #2
checkbox #3 |
checkbox #4 |
checkbox #5 | error #5


How should i go about doing this. I attempt to try this but i get no error.
