Advice on ACL package

I am in the process of trying to decide between the old and the new ACL package. The documentation recommends considering the new package if you are implementing a new project. This has been the case for well over a year so I wonder if that statement is still valid. Does anyone have any answers to the following questions.

1.) Is the "new" acl package still being worked on?
2.) If so... Is it safe to assume that it will be largely the same between 1.06 and whatever the next version of acegi.
3.) Is there any projection for when the next version will be out.

Everything I read suggests that the new ACLS package will be continued on in the next release (whenever that will come, like you said; it's been a looong time). I thought that a new Acegi release was scheduled for the end of 2007, but the lists of tasks in JIRA seems to never grow smaller.
On the other hand; those who wait....
