Hi Martin,
I have the same output as whoke and my installation is clean and is not an upgrade.
I downloaded springsource-tool-suite-2.9.1.RELEASE-e3.7.2-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz and extracted in /home/vito/springsource2.9.1 I have the old 2.8.x version in /home/vito/springsource.

You see the same package use conflict message in your console when you are using your freshly installed 2.9.1 installation? Or do you mean a different output?

after a reinstall of 2.9.1 version the Spring template project are visible.

I am also experiencing this issue. Mine is also very similar to this issue : https://issuetracker.springsource.com/browse/STS-2281. I have Hibernate Tools installed as well but I believe this issue appeared after the last time my STS updated.

I originally installed 2.8, then added Hibernate Tools, then upgraded.

Is there a place I can get 2.8 to see if this will recreate it?

As mentioned a moment ago on the JIRA ticket, you can get older versions from the official standard download page, just go to "Other Downloads" and the older versions will appear.

Let me know how that goes and what you find out.
