Default does the spring roo console have to be open when i'm making changes?

If I make changes to my code while working in STS, and the roo shell isn't open, do I need to open it and type a command for it to detect changes and make the necessary adjustments to my project?

No, I don't think you need to have it opened. But the next time you'll open it, it will detect the changes you have made in your source code and will act on it.
