I am having trouble getting started. The command git://git.springsource.org/spring-security/spring-security.git
does not connect. Do I need to configure the source? Establish credentialas? Open a firewall? Is there another way to get the source to avoid this step?

I have no idea what you exactly want to do, but in case you want to clone the git repository of spring-security onto your drive, you should do a "git clone git://git.springsource.org/spring-security/spring-security.git".
