Upgrading from STS 2.5.1 to 2.7.1

From the sts eclipse "check for updates" menu, I select "SpringSource Tool Suite 2.7.1.201107091000-RELEASE" update but then it gets so far downloading and keeps coming up with this error -

An error occurred while collecting items to be installed
session context wasprofile=com.springsource.sts.ide, phase=org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.engine.phase s.Collect, operand=, action=).
Artifact not found: binary,com.springsource.sts.ide_root.win32.win32.x 86,2.7.1.201107091000-RELEASE.

Any ideas?

Hi!

This sounds a lot like a temporary download problem when the update process tried to download the mentioned artifact. I double-checked this and the update from 2.5.1 to 2.7.1 should work fine and the mentioned artifact is also available from that URL. Could you try to update again?

If the update persist to fail, you can always download a fresh STS 2.7.1 installation, but that would require additional plugins you might have in your setting to the installed again...

thanks Martin, I did try several times (with -clean option also) and always fails. Will try again tomorrow. Is there anyway of over writing 2.5.1 with 2.71 and keep existing settings, plugins etc... really want to avoid having to setup again from scratch if I can help it?

Hi!

I don't know of any way to "override" 2.5.1 with 2.7.1 and keep existing settings. Most of your settings are saved in the workspace (so that will be there automatically) and you can export and import additional preferences manually (via "Export -> Preferences" etc.), but you would need to install the additional plugins that you are using again into the fresh 2.7.1.

But if you install STS 2.7.1, take care that it runs on top of Eclipse 3.7, so you might wanna check the compatibility with your other plugins with Eclipse 3.7 (Indigo). The other option would be to install a fresh STS 2.6.1 (runs on Eclipse 3.6), update that to STS 2.7.1 so that you get a STS 2.7.1 running on Eclipse 3.6.
