Login required to add plugins?

I am using SpringSource Tool Suite
Version: 2.5.2.RELEASE
Build Id: 201101081000

When I attempt to add a plugin (from help->install new software), I select a site from my list, then I get an alert which says: "Login details were not accepted. Please provide login details for download.eclipse.org"
or the same message from dist.springsource.com if I choose the springsource update site.

I have tried entering guest or anonymous with no password, I have tried my account from the eclipse marketplace site, I have tried no user or password; all result in the same error. If I cancel out of the dialog box it will also fail to connect.

The detail error log says:
Some sites could not be found. See the error log for more detail.
Authentication failed for http://download.eclipse.org/technolo...7/update-site/.
Authentication failed for http://dist.springsource.com/release/TOOLS/update/e3.6.
Authentication failed for http://download.eclipse.org/releases/helios.

Anyone else run into this issue?

Hi!

This sounds strange since those sites are not password protected. Maybe an issue with a firewall on your site and/or a proxy from your corporate firewall that requires authentication?

You are correct. This is a problem with a proxy server. However, I have not been able to resolve it just yet. I have tried every possible proxy server setting in the STS configuration, but it will not connect.

Does anyone know how STS (Eclipse) is connecting that would make it different from a web browser? I thought it was a standard http connection to the udate site. I can connect to the update sites from IE, Firefox, etc. with no trouble.

Did you play with the network connection settings in Eclipse? I would try the "native" setting in your case, but I have no idea if that really solves your problem... Just a guess...

Finally got past this issue by using a different proxy server which is allowing the connection. I have no idea why the first one would not work, and no amount of tweaking the proxy settings in Eclipse helped. We have the same problem if we try to use Maven to build and download dependencies.

I would still love to know how the connection from Eclipse is seen as different by the proxy server that caused it to be blocked.

I don't know the exact answer and struggle myself sometimes with the proxy settings within Eclipse. Nevertheless I will let you know if I find something that explains this in more detail.

I faced the same issue. Turns out that my proxy server wanted me to authenticate before it can allow me to access any site in the internet. So I provided my system login credentials (my organization's internal account credentials) and I was able to get rid of this error.
