You're right. In their official FAQ, SpringSource states quite clearly that:
Currently the only path that leads to the official Spring Certification is the training path. Students need to attend a Core Spring, Rich Web Applications with Spring or Enterprise Integration with Spring Training before they can become certified. There is no other path that leads to certification at this moment.
I was not aware of this change. And it's a real shame. I would never have gotten certified had this certification policy been in place a year ago. It is this kind of policy that sticks the "elitist" label onto Spring Framework.
